Heritage

From industrial roots to vibrant present

At NOMA heritage mixes with modernity, creating a unique tapestry that tells the story of the neighbourhood’s rich history.

Walking through the streets, one can admire the remnants of Manchester’s industrial past juxtaposed with contemporary structures, offering a glimpse into the city’s evolution over time.

Famous as the place where Richard Arkwright first pioneered the steam engine which kickstarted the Industrial Revolution, and as the home of The Co-op, who built and grew their ethically principled business in to an ideal that still thrives today.

And where forgotten histories are remembered, like the maverick James Sadler – a chemist, pastry chef and aeronaut who launched a hot air balloon from a NOMA street and has been immortalised in the naming of Sadler’s Yard.

This legacy of endeavour, enterprise and co-operation is in the DNA of NOMA, from the bricks that can still be seen in the sensitively refurbished buildings, to the new businesses and individuals creating the next generation of pioneering stories.

Whether exploring historic buildings or attending cultural events that pay homage to the area’s heritage, residents and visitors alike are immersed in NOMA’s rich tapestry of history and culture, ensuring that its heritage remains an integral part of its identity
