Valette Ensemble are a young group of strings players creating classical music experiences that push the boundaries of what a concert can be. In Scheherazade, the players will perform newly created music inspired by the orchestral suite by Rimsky-Korsakov. This will be saturated with storytelling from actor and writer Rowan Kudekha-Lark. Expect an evening of theatre, excellent musicianship and an inversion of the perspective we usually see Scheherazade’s story from.
The story’s main protagonist (Scheherazade) is a character from the ultimate collection of Middle Eastern folk tales One Thousand and One Nights. She ingeniously saves herself and her people from being murdered through the power of story telling. Staving off the Sultan’s habit of executing his brides on their wedding night by telling him a story every night which ends on a cliffhanger. He then is too captivated by knowing what happens next to kill her.It was this story that inspired Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov to write one of classical music’s best loved orchestral suites.
